Access to education in Germany still determined by family background

More children are enrolled in German schools today as a result of higher birth rates and immigration. Still, a stark divide exists between those who are likely to attain a higher education and those who are not.

When Germany's Ministry of Education presented its 2018 Education in Germany report in Berlin this Friday, three things stood out: More citizens are getting an education, a teacher shortage looms and a person's educational opportunities are closely linked to their social and economic background.

Joking German minister Seehofer urged to quit as Afghan deportee dies

1531364900177.png

A day after Germany's outspoken Interior Minister Horst Seehofer joked that 69 Afghan migrants were deported on his 69th birthday, it has emerged that one of the group has died.

The 23-year-old failed asylum seeker had lived in Germany for eight years.

His body was found in temporary accommodation on Tuesday, six days after being flown to Kabul.

Political opponents called for Mr Seehofer to resign, saying he was unsuitable for the job.

Hopefully his laughter has stuck in his throat... it's high time he goes," said left-wing Linke MP Jan Korte.

What happened?
The unnamed man, originally from northern Afghanistan, had come to Germany as a minor. He had been living in Hamburg and had convictions for theft and resisting officers.

He was put on a flight on 4 July with 68 other failed asylum seekers, as part of a German programme to deport Afghans to areas of the country seen as safe. The policy is part of an EU-wide push to step up removal of failed asylum seekers.

He was given a temporary place to stay at a hotel run by the International Organization for Migration for returning migrants who have nowhere to go.

The 23-year-old is thought to have killed himself some time on Tuesday. The Pro Asyl charity said he had apparently been forced into a situation where he had no way out, and it warned there was a risk it might not be an isolated case.

Osmanen Germania: Germany bans ethnic Turkish boxer gang

1531365259910.png

Germany has banned an ethnic Turkish boxer gang called Osmanen Germania, saying it is involved in serious crime.

The group identifies with Turkish nationalism, espouses a macho boxing and biker culture and is reported to be close to Turkey's ruling AK Party.

Police raided the group's premises in four German states on Tuesday.

A German Interior Ministry tweet (in German) said "the group and all its activities are banned". Police reckon the group has at least 300 members.

Justifying the ban, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said "whoever rejects the rule of law can expect no leniency from us".

He said Osmanen Germania was among "rocker type" groups "whose members commit serious crimes".

In Stuttgart, south-western Germany, eight alleged Osmanen members went on trial in March, accused of attempted murder, blackmail, drug-trafficking and sexual slavery.

The German public broadcaster BR, based in Bavaria, says Osmanen members in Germany have harassed critics of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, including Kurdish activists.
