Give your heart a new life with cardiac rehab

Stockbroker Sunil Fadia cut through the finishing line of the Mumbai marathon in 2010 and followed it up by completing the 21 km half marathon last year. Wondering what is so great about that?

Factor this - he was running the marathon just months after having undergone a heart by-pass surgery.

While the majority of those who have undergone such major surgery consider themselves lucky to be able to get back to normal life in months, Sunil was preparing for his next long run, thanks to his customized "cardiac rehabilitation program" .

Cardiac rehabilitation is a professionally supervised and tailored-to-your-need program to help people recover from heart attacks, heart surgery and procedures like stenting and angioplasty, in the shortest amount of time. It incorporates not only individually designed exercise program with telemetry monitoring but also nutritional counselling, stress management and yoga.

A study recently published in the journal Circulation showed that patients who had heart attacks lived longer with such rehab sessions . It was especially true for patients who had undergone coronary by-pass graft surgery or had been hospitalized for chronic stable angina (chest pain accompanying exertion).

"Every session helps," says Dr. Aashish Contractor who is consulting with the state-of-the-art Cardiac
Prevention and Rehabilitation centre at VARDAN - a Times of India initiative. "The science of cardiac rehab not only helps you get back on your feet and into your normal life in the quickest time, but also reduces risk of
future cardiovascular episodes," Dr. Contractor added.

Cardiovascular disorders are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in India . It is also clear that Indians are genetically predisposed to heart disease. Till a few decades ago, when a person suffered a heart attack or underwent a by-pass , the treatment recommended complete bed rest for a month. "We now know that this could have detrimental effects on the patient. Cardiac rehabilitation programs started developing in the seventies , and now include comprehensive cardiac risk reduction techniques in addition to exercise. The program reduces the patient's future risk of a heart attack through medical evaluation, prescribed exercise, cardiac risk factor modification (such as diabetes or blood pressure), education and counselling," he said.

The major goal of the rehab program is to restore normal functioning and lifestyle.
