Horse Gram Soup

DSC00501.JPG

  • 30 gm of presoaked horse gram is boiled in 500 ml of water till the beans soften. The beans are mashed well .The mixture is filtered and the soup is spiced with a pinch of cumin (jeera ) powder ,rock salt and pepper powder.
  • It is ideal to drink this soup / stock in the winters as it is 'heat producing'.In the summers the quantity should be reduced. Beginners can start with 15 gm of the beans as they may not stomach it well and then gradually increase the quantity to 50 gm.
  • This is a good aid in reducing weight fast.

Horse Gram Curry

horse+gram+curry.png

Ingredients

1 cup Horse gram, soaked overnight
2-3 tsp Coriander seeds
1/2-1 tsp Cumin
1/2 tsp Black pepper
2-3 Dry red chilies, low spiced
A pinch of asafetida
3-4 tbsp Grated coconut, Fresh or frozen
1 Onion, small to medium sized
1 tsp Jaggery/sugar
1/4 tsp Tamarind paste
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1-2 tsp Ghee/Clarified butter
1-2 strands Curry leaves
Salt as per taste

Method

Dry roast coriander seeds, cumin, black pepper, red chilies and asafetida until you smell the fresh masala.
Powder them in a blender without adding any water.
To this, add the grated coconut, onion and grind to a smooth paste using water if required; keep aside.
Pressure cook the soaked horse gram with some water – it takes a little longer to cook.
So, you might have to cook it for a couple of whistles more than usual.
Add the masala from step 2, to the cooked gram and boil well.
Add water to get the required consistency.
Add tamarind paste, jaggery and salt; boil further.
Adjust the taste according to your wish.
Temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves.
Serve hot with rice and enjoy.
