How to loose weight and how to lower cholesterol?

Traditionally it is thought that horse gram is a big cure for weight loss and slimming. Grandma’s recommendation to an obese lady would be horse gram in any form. Horse gram is a popular south Indian bean and it promotes weight loss and slimming when taken continuously is any of the following forms. It is also very good in controlling and reducing cholesterol , like the popular flax seed.

1. Horse gram rasam popularly known as kollu or kulith rasam in south Indian languages is a soup made with horse gram. Refer to south Indian cookery websites or blogs to learn the procedure to make it. This can be eaten with rice or just as a soup in a soup bowl. Incidentally kollu rasam is very good for cough and cold also. It is a great relief. (Refer to my post on cough and cold for home remedies for cold)


2. Horse gram sprout is another way of consuming it. Just like any other bean, soak in water and sprout. Sprouts always have more vitamins. If it is difficult to eat a bowl full of plain horsegram sprouts, then some salad veggies can be added to it along with salt and pepper. This is best for controlling and reducing cholesterol.


3. There are so many other ways in which the horse gram can be consumed.

4. If you do not like the taste of any of the recipes, then just dry roast a small quantity of horse gram. Roast it till you get the nice aroma of the horse gram. Grind to make a fine powder. Eat 1 tablespoon of this with just water or mix it with a soup or just mix it with any food of your choice.

Any of the above said ways of consuming horse gram greatly helps in weight loss and lowering of cholesterol.

[h=3]Mashed Horse Gram / Kollu Masiyal[/h]

Horse gram / Kollu is famous in kongunadu areas of Tamilnadu. They prepare many recipes with this like masiyal, chutney, rasam etc... Persons who are wishing to lose weight can include this in their diet. Yes this helps in reducing body weight and this is a healthy dish too.




Ingredients

  • Horse gram - 1 cup

  • Shallots - 8 to 10

  • Dry Red Chillies - 3 to 4

  • Garlic - 2 cloves, crushed

  • Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tbsp

  • Curry leaves - few

  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tbsp

  • Salt to taste

  • Oil - 2 tbsp

Method

  • Wash and soak horsegram overnight or 4 to 5 hours.

  • Add enough water and pressure cook horsegram for 4 whistles.

  • Heat oil in pan, add mustard and cumin seeds, allow them to splutter.

  • Then add curry leaves, crushed garlic cloves and shallots and fry till the shallot turns pink.

  • Add horse gram and salt to it, bring it to boil and cook for 3 Min's.

  • Then with help of wooden masher mash them.

  • Serve with hot rice and a drop of ghee to it.
Tips:

  • After pressure cooking horsegram, take out the excess water in a separate bowl and if u drink this water every morning in the empty stomach, helps in reducing weight. Even you take boiled horsegram little instead of water.

  • With that water u can make rasam too. Will be posting that later.

Horse gram sundal

Horse gram : Softly boiled.
Usage:
Start with 20 to 25 gm and gradually increase to 50 to 100 gm. Take in the Morning and Evening. Can add onion and chilly pieces along with seasoning.
Take butter milk and barley for reducing heat generated due to above food.
Benefits:
Excess fat in Stomach reduces and excess weight will be reduced.
