What to pack for labour

  1. Copies of your medical records.
  2. Slippers
  3. An nightdress or a comfortable dress to wear during labour.
  4. Digital camera or camcorder.
  5. Things to help you relax or pass the time, such as books, magazines, games and so on.
  6. Pictures of someone or something you love. They could be the inspiration you need to see you through to the end.
  7. Mobile phone and charger, if you are planning to use one.
  8. Music to listen to.
  9. Snacks (if the hospital does not have a canteen).
  10. ATM/credit cards for emergencies.
  11. Medical insurance papers (if any).
  12. Mobile phone and charger.

For after the birth
  1. A going-home outfit. You'll need loose comfortable clothes to wear while you're in hospital and for the journey home. It will take a while for your tummy to go down, so you'll still be wearing maternity clothes when you come home.
  2. Nursing bras. Take two or three.
  3. Maternity/sanitary pads. Bring a couple of packs.
  4. Nightdress : Front-opening ones are useful in the early days of breastfeeding.
  5. Feminine wipes, or clean soft cotton sarees that can be cut into napkins and used to gently wipe and dispose.

For your baby
  1. A couple of outfits for the initial days (cotton dresses).
  2. A cotton roll and some cotton buds to clean your baby.
  3. A few soft cotton sheets.
  4. Baby waterproof sheet / rubber sheet to keep your bed from getting wet.
  5. A soft towel and a few hand towels.
  6. Baby blanket. Take a warm one if the weather is cold.
  7. Nappies.
  8. Small bibs. Babies sometimes take out curdled milk while burping. The bibs will protect the baby’s clothes from getting messed up.
  9. A warm woollen cap and a few pairs of cotton socks, mittens and booties -- especially in winters.
  10. Small hand towels and napkins. You may need to wipe the baby from time to time and these hand towels are very useful and handy.
  11. A foldable mosquito net especially if you have a lot of mosquitoes, flies and insects hovering around your home.
