Know your cellulite before it hits you

Everyone falls victim to this skin disaster. But let's not get worked up; let's work out - the how, why, and what (to do and not do) about cellulite. Today, Dr, Udhay Sidhu a cosmetologist and dermatologist from Apollo Hospital, Bangalore, gives us an in-depth analysis that will help you tighten your skin and flaunt that sexy body.

What is cellulite:
The term cellulite refers to appearance of dimpled skin on abdomen, thighs, buttocks and hips of women but can be seen in men too. Genetics, post adolescent age, distribution of fat and female hormones are the contributing factors.

What causes cellulite:
In order to understand the cause of this cosmetically unacceptable problem we need to know about 'septae'. Septae are fibrous connective tissue bands, which connect the skin with the underlying muscle, fat cells are sandwiched between these. When the fat cells accumulate they push the skin upwards but the septae exerts a downward pull leading to the dimpled appearance.

Difference in men and women:
The patterns of these septae are different in both the genders. In men they run horizontally whereas in women they follow a vertical pattern.

In addition damaged circulatory system (heart and blood vessels) and lymphatics (tissues that help drain our excess fluids and proteins) also contribute to cellulite.

When do they appear:
Age brings with it a load of problems and cellulite is one of them. Hormonal changes in women are also a cause, in addition pregnancy and repeated pregnancies. But you can also blame weight gain and loss as a reason for cellulite.

How to prevent:
Active lifestyle along with muscle toning exercises help to avoid cellulite. Believe it or not, but apparently thongs, boyshorts and loose undergarments can prevent cellulite. But firstly, eat low fat foods - fruits, vegetables and fibers. Secondly, reduce stress, exercise regularly and have a steady yet healthy weight.

Temporary methods
: Massage and cellulite reduction creams are temporary methods to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Anti cellulite creams contain methylxanthines (such as caffeine), retinol and antioxidant dimethylaminoethanol. These act by improving microcirculation and increasing collagen synthesis. What remains questionable is whether these creams penetrate deep enough to reach the fat cells and what is the concentration required for the desired effect?
