The 'single surfer' is claiming his or her place in the dating world. In fact, around 84 per cent of people in the UK would rather meet a partner online.

We look at online relationship dynamics back home

In the last decade or so, the dating scene has changed drastically, with singles opting to meet people online instead of a coffee shop. While traditionally people have frowned upon online relationships, this attitude has undergone a sea change over the years.

In fact, a new UK study conducted by an online dating website reveals that 84 per cent of people in the UK prefer meeting new people online, out of which one in three singles admit that they would rather meet a perspective partner on the internet.
In contrast, only one in six people prefer to meet in bars and at parties, while one in 12 want to meet at night clubs.

The emergence of the 'single surfer' Ryan D'Souza, a 24-year-old executive, claims he is open to the idea of making friends and meeting people online because it's a great way to socialise.

Having a hectic lifestyle has its limitations, you hardly get time for yourself, let alone your friends. Hence, meeting a new person online is very convenient., a marketing professional, who met her current boyfriend online, adds, "There was a time when it was considered taboo to date someone you had met online. That's not the case anymore, while you need to be careful of the people you choose to associate with, even elders are more supportive of the idea."

Things you should keep in mind
Just like in a face-to-face meeting, while meeting a stranger online take everything they say with a pinch of salt.
Find out more about what he or she do, where he or she stays through gradual conversations.

Don't disclose too many details about yourself until you are convinced you can trust the person.

When you finally decide to meet in person, make sure you let your parents or someone in the family know about your whereabouts so that they can reach you in case of an emergency.

Avoid meeting the person alone, if possible take a friend along and choose a venue that's public.
