Increase Fluids

Dehydration is one of the main causes of constipation. So, you must increase the fluid intake of your toddler. Give your toddler as much water as possible. Feeding adequate water throughout the day prevents dehydration, softens the stools and promotes bowel regularity. You can also give your toddler prune/apple juice diluted with equal amount of water or homemade vegetable juice twice daily. Avoid carbonated drinks. Apple and prune juice are very helpful in treating constipation.

Increase Fiber

Offering your toddler foods that are rich in fiber is simple and healthy way to cure this problem. You can give bowel regulating food items like graham crackers, shredded wheat, bran muffins, brown rice, bran cereals, oatmeal and whole wheat bread. Along with these foods, give lots of vegetables (spinach, carrots, peas, cabbage, beans, broccoli, squash, sweetcorn, potatoes and green leafy vegetables) and fruits (apples, prunes, grapes, apricots, plums, peaches and pears). Never give bananas to your child as they block the system.

Physical Activity

Make sure your toddler spends the day with a good amount of physical activity. Physical activity aids digestion and prevents constipation. To treat constipation, take your child for a walk, turn on the music and dance together, play at the park, let him to ride a bike or jump rope. Perform these activities for at least 30 to 60 minutes daily.

Decrease Intake of Foods That Cause Constipation

Limit the intake of junk foods, dairy products, candy, pastry, cookies, chips and soft drinks until the problem is solved. These foods may worsen the condition. 1 to 2 servings of dairy products daily are enough for a toddler. You can give soy milk in place of regular milk. Soy milk helps to reduce the problem.

Tummy Massage

Massaging your toddler’s tummy for several minutes a day can provide him relief from constipation. Put your hand across the child’s stomach, measuring 3 finger-widths below the navel. Now, gently rub on the belly with the help of fingertips for about 3 minutes or till you feel firmness.

Toilet Training

Toilet training is among the most effective ways to treat constipation. It enhances the stool habits of toddler and thereby treats constipation. Your toddler must use the potty at least one time daily. Fix a potty time for your child.
