She fought obesity, asthma, Nina’s granny says

Oblivious of the racial slurs being heaped on her granddaughter who won the Miss America pageant, Nina Davuluri's 85-year-old grandmother V Koteswaramma is rejoicing.

"I am not surprised. I was always confident she would go places as I was aware of her abilities and dedication," said Koteswaramma. Her home at Moghalrajapuram was busy with family friends and relatives trooping in to congratulate the grandparents since Monday morning.

Recalling how her grand-daughter struggled before reaching the pinnacle, Koteswaramma said that Nina overcame two obstacles, asthma and obesity. "I can only say that Nina will not stop here," she said.

A relative said Nina was the only one in her immediate family who did not pursue medicine. While her parents, father Koteswara Chowdary and mother Sheila Ranjani, are doctors in the US, her maternal aunt and uncle too are doctors. Nina's elder sister, Meena, is in her third year of medicine. Her paternal uncles are also doctors in US.

"Nina too wanted to study medicine and become a cardiologist. But she took a new route and has now won the Miss America title," Koteswaramma beamed. She said Nina was a loves Telugu films and culture and is a trained Kuchipudi and Bharat Natyam dancer.

Koteswara shifted to the US soon after his marriage in 1981. Sheila is on the board of Montessori Kalasala as vice-president and visits the city at least once in two years. The girls of the Montessori celebrated the Nina's new title.

Nina last visited Vijaywada city in 2007 soon after becoming first runners up in Miss America's outstanding teen contest. However, except for Koteswaramma's close family circle, very few in the city knew of her until she was crowned Miss America. Nina is a graduate in cognitive science from Michigan university.

Earlier, a Vijayawada girl, Gadde Sindhoora won the 'Femina Miss India' title and reached the Miss World semi-finals in 2005.

71-YEAR OLD GRANDMOTHER WINS BEAUTY PAGEANT!

In a special beauty pageant held in California, 71 year old Julie Rose from Utah won the title of Queen Lola 2013. Winning the title from among the 10 participants, Rose was most thrilled, as she exclaimed, "it's awesome! Most of the family is here."

"Cross-fit junkie" is a term we mostly associate with young men, but Rose definitely qualifies to be called one. She bench presses 150 pounds, and is very particular about fitness. She's glad to have some more years to spend with her grandchildren and that she isn't a burden to her family or to society. While most people at her age need assistance, Julie is glad that she is still capable of assisting others! She has 7 children and 37 grandchildren.

Another notable contestant was Filipino boxer Lily Lao, who was 4th runner up and won the talent round as well, performing a brilliant musical about her life.

There are only two criteria to contest in this pageant - to be Filipino and to have grandchildren. The winners get Phillipine vacations, jewellery and opportunities to be on television.

This unique pageant also serves to raise money for work on youth, education and poverty programs run by the ABS-CBN foundation and Search to Involve Philipino Americans.

[h=1]Brazilian wins Pattaya's transgender queen contest[/h]
A Brazilian has won the 9th Miss International Queen transgender beauty pageant in Thailand, with the United States and Thai contestants in second and third place.
Marcelo Ohio won first prize, which included 300,000 baht, a crown with real gemstones and free surgery "for anything" at a famed plastic surgery clinic in Bangkok, organisers said.

The pageant held in the beach resort of Pattaya since 2004, ended around midnight Friday.

US citizen Shantell D'Marco came second in the beauty pageant, with Thai contestant Nethnapada Kanrayanon coming third.

There were 25 contestants from 17 countries in this year's contest, organised by the Tiffany's Show Pattaya Company, including three from Brazil.

The show was launched 40 years ago to provide Pattaya with a novel form of entertainment while offering transgenders a legitimate career option, said Arisa Phanthusak, Tiffany's manager and organiser of the Miss International contest.

In 2004, the show went international, offering transgenders from other countries an opportunity to bask in the limelight.

"After Thailand, I think the Philippines and Brazil are the countries that are most tolerant of transgenders," Arisa said.

Transgenders are numerous in Thailand, where many have found successful careers in the entertainment, fashion and cosmetics sectors and even in government service.

"It is in our character to be tolerant," Arisa said. "We are free here [in Thailand] and we are service-oriented people," she said.

PHILIPPINES BANNED FOR TWO YEARS FROM THE BEAUTY PAGEANTS?

The Philippines has had a bumpy year. While the country is still recovering from the desolation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, rumours have started floating around that the country has been disqualified from all future International beauty pageants for the next two years. And this is because of a prodigious advantage. The country went on to win three titles this year including Miss World, Miss Supranational and third Runner up title in Miss Universe. But is this dominance a reason good enough to disqualify Philippines?

The answer is no. And this rumour remains a rumour which was reportedly fabricated by The Adobo Chronicles. The report stated that the Association of Beauty Pageant Franchise Holders (ABPFH) has banned Philippines from future international beauty competitions citing 'enormous advantage' by Filipina candidates in almost all the pageants this year.

It may be noted that The Adobo Chronicles is a false news website which publishes mordant articles. The website states "Everything you read on this site is based on fact, except for the lies."

The rumour has spread like a wildfire setting twitter on ablaze. "Philippines is disqualified from Miss Universe Pageant for 2 years because the judges want the other countries to have a chance at winning LOL" tweeted a fan. Another fan tweeted "As a Filipina, I don't know whether to feel offended or flattered."
