Eating papaya is not safe... Because you wouldn't know it is fully ripened or not..
Papaya's inner part has latex like substance that can trigger contraction and result in early labor or miscarriage.. So to be at the safer side eating papaya is not recommended..

Dear Siva Priya,

The warning about papaya and its fact about its safety during pregnancy is both a fact and a fallacy. There are divided notions on this aspect as papaya contains papaverine a substance that is used as a smooth muscle relaxant and vasodilator to relieve arterial spasms causing cerebral, peripheral, or myocardial ischemia and is also injected into the penis in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction.

But that amount of papeverine has to be concentrated and mechanically extracted from so many papayas. So it is a general safety warning that is advised by elders to avoid this fruit during the first trimester or through the whole pregnancy.

What actually matters and is useful for daily purpose is that a pregnant mother should not have an episode of dehydration due to food poisoning. Loose stools or vomiting could lead to a drop in levels of a pregnant woman’s amniotic fluid which in turn could lead to a premature contraction.

So one needs to be careful with what they eat. Papaya ,pineapple and mangoes are seasonal fruits so they are not available through the year, preserved forms of these fruit can be stale and full of chemical preservative or canned in sugar syrup which is unhealthy and if spoilt or beyond the expiry date can cause a bad stomach for the mother. Never the less these fruits have high fibre and excessive consumption can cause loose stools. So because of so many ambiguities, elders advise restraint. If you accidentally consume these foods or take it once in a while when these fruits are fresh in small quantities, you need not worry at all.

Take care….

Rakhi
