PEPTIC ULCER AND ITS HOME REMEDIES

diagram-of-peptic-ulcer.jpg

DEFINITION
An ulcer is an erosion (open sore) on the surface of an organ or tissue. Ulcers most commonly erupt in the esophagus stomach, and duodenum, in which case they are known as peptic ulcers.

CAUSES

1) The problem begins, in most cases, with a spiral-shaped germ that seems to live for one purpose, digging holes in our stomachs. This bacterium, known as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori for short). H. pylori never cause problems in most people, but in an unlucky minority, the bug burrows through the stomach's protective mucous coating. The bacteria and stomach acid irritate the sensitive lining beneath, causing ulcers to form.
2) In some cases, H. pylori aren't the villain, however. People who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin for pain relief over long periods can develop ulcers.
3) Heredity also plays an important role in contributing to ulcers. People who have a family history of ulcers seem to have a greater likelihood of acquiring the condition, as do people with type O blood. In addition, liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and emphysema are among the conditions that may increase vulnerability to ulcers. Stomach and pancreatic cancers also can cause these sores to form.

HOME REMEDIES FOR STOMACH ULCER
#1: Follow a diet rich in high-fiber and unrefined plant foods as possible. A diet rich in highly processed grains (such as white flour) deprives the body of fiber and protein, which can shield the digestive lining from stomach acid. Some high-fiber foods include spinach, cabbage, broccoli, and sprouts.

#2: Eat small portions to avoid producing too much digestive acid, but eat frequently to keep these acids from attacking the stomach linings.
#3: One of the very best home remedies for ulcers is eating raw cabbage. Juicing the raw cabbage will make it easier to take and mixing it with carrots in the juicer will make it better tasting. Drink half a cup before each meal and at bed time and make sure that it is fresh. Your ulcer may be gone in only a few weeks.
#4: Avoid milk; although it soothes the digestive tract and neutralizes stomach acid, it also stimulates the production of more acid, further irritating the ulcerated area. Research shows, foods high in calcium increase stomach acid. So while the protein part of the milk may soothe, the calcium may make matters worse.
#5: Avoid coffee, alcohol, citrus juices, sugar, hot and spicy foods, these substances irritate the stomach and encourage the production of gastric acid.
#6: Eat at least three bananas a day. These fruits contain an antibacterial substance that inhibits the growth of ulcer-causing H. pylori. Studies show that animals fed bananas have a thicker stomach wall and greater mucus production in the stomach, which helps build a barrier between digestive acids and the lining of the stomach. Eating plantains is also helpful.
#7: Raw honey soothes and reduces inflammation of the lining of the stomach and is good for healing as well.
#8: Garlic's antibacterial properties include fighting H. pylori. Take two small crushed cloves a day.
#9: Plums and other red and purple colored foods such as berries inhibit the growth of H. pylori.
#10: Coconut oil kills the bacteria that cause ulcers and gas, but it's mostly a long-term remedy.
#11: Take 5000 IU of Vitamin A four times a day, for six weeks, to heal the mucus membrane.
#12: Take Vitamin E to heal the stomach linings.
#13: A few other good ulcer remedies are: raw goats' milk, barley water, aloe juice, licorice root or marshmallow root.
