Skin-care bad habits you must kick off now

1. Skipping the sunscreen
If you thought you need to apply sunscreen only once before you leave home, it's time for a beauty recheck! Most of the sunscreens come off while you're sweating, especially if they're not water-resistant. "Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every three hours if out in the sun, in cloudy weather or even if travelling by car as UVA does penetrate through glass. It is also necessary if one is working on the computer, as they emit UVA rays," says Dr Jaishree Sharad, Director of Skinfiniti Skin & Laser Clinic, Mumbai.

2. Non-stop cell-phone chatter
While, you must be enjoying yourself chattering for hours together on the cell-phone, your skin is screaming for help. "Constant phone chatter results in friction, occlusion and heat, all of which makes you break out," says Dr Jaishree. If the habit is too difficult to shake off, consider a headset.

3. Using products you don't need
Commercials lure us to buy those glossy beauty products. But don't fall for it, unless it is right for your skin! Certain products may make you feel good momentarily and still may be an absolute wrong fit. Evaluate your skin type and use products prescribed by a dermatologist. It is your best bet to a glowing and healthy skin!

4. Going OTT with cleansing
Anything in excess is bad and that includes excessive cleaning or exfoliation of your face. Dr Jaishree explains, "Over exfoliation damages the protective layer of your skin, making it susceptible to allergies, sun burn, tan, pigmentation and rashes." It is always advisable to use a mild cleanser and apply a toner, depending on your skin type. If your skin feels too tight after cleansing, you've probably overdone it.

5. The shower sham
Long, relaxing showers are definitely rejuvenating, but if the water is too hot and you've been there too long, it is bad for your skin. "Hot showers as pleasurable as they may be, lead to dry dehydrated skin," says Dr Jaishree. They affect the outermost layer of the skin known as the epidermis. While the heat from the shower makes the skin's oils soften, the soap leads to stripping the skin's oil barrier in minutes.

6. The makeup mayhem
Most of the makeup products contain harsh chemicals that can seriously harm your skin. So it is important to clean it away thoroughly. "Sleeping without removing makeup or cleansing it, clogs pores and causes acne breakouts or even rashes," says Dr Jaishree.

Do wash your dirty makeup brushes and combs as well. They can cause infections.

7. Binging on alcohol
Alcohol may uplift your spirits but sadly doesn't do the same for your skin. Late night parties and alcohol causes puffy eyes and dark circles. Not to forget water retention, that makes you look bloated. If you must indulge, have just a couple of drinks and remember to finish with plenty of water.
