A stem cell is essentially the building block of the human body. Stem cells are capable of dividing for long periods of time, are unspecialized, but can develop into specialized cells. The earliest stem cells in the human body are those found in the human embryo. The stem cells inside an embryo will eventually give rise to every cell, tissue and organ in the fetus's body. Unlike a regular cell, which can only replicate to create more of its own kind of cell, a stem cell is pluripotent, meaning when it divides, it can make any one of the 220 different cells in the human body. Stem cells also have the capability to self-renew -they can reproduce themselves many times over.
This amazing ability makes them very important and vital in medical technology. When transplanted into a patient’s body, stem cells have the ability to find injured cells and tissues and repair or replace the patient’s damaged or diseased cells and improve the quality of health and save their life.
Hailed as a promising cure for everything from cancer, lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, liver disorders and heart ailments, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury and paralysis stem cells are regarded as the miracle pills of the future. Stem cells are at the forefront of one of the most fascinating and revolutionary areas of biology today and scientists are constantly discovering new uses for them. We are living in the exciting era of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Stem cells are currently being studied in numerous clinical trials for these fields involve stem cells from the umbilical cord blood and/or cord tissue. By banking your baby’s umbilical cord blood and tissue stem cells now, you enhance his or her access to these health technologies in immediate future.

Over the past few decades, stem cell therapy has been used as a treatment in various clinical studies to treat medical conditions that lack conventional treatment options. Scientists across the world are trying to make new innovative stem cell transplant strategies for effective results. Stem cell therapy has shown successful recovery in treating patients affected with medical conditions such as Leukemia, Lymphomas, Hodgkin’s disease, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Thalassemia, Myelodysplastic disorder etc.
Usually the umbilical cord stem cells are used in the treatment of blood related conditions and autoimmune disorders through a 2 step procedure:

  1. The patient undergoes a series of chemotherapy to wipe off the affected immune system.
  2. Stem cells are transplanted to form new healthy blood cells and immune cells; this will replenish the patient’s bone marrow and immune system.
