Study shows babies love music; it’s soothing and promotes health

Kids love music. Lullabies and nursery rhymes are soothing and engaging, and there is even reason to think tunes are good for our little ones’ health (premature babies in intensive care units have been found to gain weight faster and leave the hospital sooner when they listen to 30 minutes of Mozart a day).

Babies are born to dance according to a new study conducted by University of York Professor Marcell Zentner. Although it is unclear why humans developed the predisposition to dance, Zenter suspects it has evolved for some other function that just happens to be relevant for music processing. So turn on one of the below 5 songs and watch as your baby jiggles and giggles to the music. Dance baby, dance!

Zenter observed the reactions of 120 infants between 5 months and 2 years old as they listened to classical music, rhythmic beats, and speech. Zenter found that babies naturally dance to music with beat and find it more engaging than speech. Zenter also recruited professional ballet dancers to analyze how well the babies matched their movement to the music. The better the infants were able to synchronize their movements with the music, the more they smiled.

Here is a list of 5 songs that have been tested to make your baby dance and smile. Enjoy!

1. Fanfarlo – The Walls Are Coming Down
2. Katy Perry – Hot N Cold
3. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home
4. Abba – Mamma Mia
5. Beyoncé – Single Ladies
