Heartburn and acid indigestion can be caused by a number of factors, including poor diet, minor health conditions, obesity, and food sensitivities. In some cases, heartburn and acid indigestion can be symptoms of a serious underlying medical condition, so it’s important to check with your doctor before trying to treat the conditions yourself. If your doctor can find no medical reason for your condition, try these tips for getting rid of heartburn and acid indigestion.

1. Ginger
Ginger has long been used as a remedy for treating digestive disorders. Make a hot drink to combat heartburn and acid indigestion by grating a piece of root ginger (approximately 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger) and leaving it to infuse in a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Strain the liquid through a sieve or piece of cheesecloth to remove the grated ginger, and then add a teaspoon of honey for sweetness.

2. Fennel
Fennel is another popular remedy used for digestive problems, especially acid indigestion and heartburn. Fennel tea can be bought from most health food stores. Alternatively, you can cook fennel as part of your meals to help prevent digestive problems from starting in the first place.

3. Slow down
One cause of heartburn and acid indigestion is eating too fast. By rushing through your mealtimes, you don’t give your food the chance to digest properly. This leads to indigestion, heartburn, flatulence, and stomach pains. Chew your food properly and take your time when eating your meals.

4. Quit smoking
Smoking is another common cause of digestive problems. Quitting smoking can provide almost instant relief for many heartburn sufferers. If you don’t feel ready to quit smoking yet, try not to smoke straight away after meals. Aim to leave at least half an hour after a heavy meal before having a cigarette.
