World cancer day special

Observed on 4th February the world over, World Cancer Day creates awareness about the fact that approximately 13% of the deaths in the world are caused by cancer.

An initiative by WHO and supported by the International Union Against Cancer, this day marks the importance of cancer awareness, prevention and early detection. This year the theme for World Cancer Day is 'Together It Is Possible.' This theme aims to reduce the number of premature deaths by 25% at least before the end of 2025.

A few key facts about cancer:
- Malignant tumours and neoplasms are the medical terms used for cancer.
- One of the leading causes of death worldwide; stomach, liver, breast and colon are the most common types of cancer.
- Lack of a healthy lifestyle is one of the leading causes of death by cancer.
- Ionizing radiation, chemical carcinogens, tobacco smoke, and virus and bacteria infections are the leading causes of cancer.

The only way we can combat cancer is by understanding its causes and becoming aware about the disease. The best way to prevent cancer is early detection, as most of the cancers, if detected early, can be cured.
