Would you hire a shopping guide

The latest fashionable accessory for a bride-to-be is her personal shopping guide. Is she your money's worth? Or is she just a passing fad in the big, fat business of Indian weddings? We find out...

Balancing full-fledged careers and family lives - most women today are doing the juggling act. Add to this the desire of being updated with the constantly changing fashion trends. At such times, getting specialized assistance for shopping may be a good idea. That's where the new breed of personal shoppers step in, whose objective is to make you look stylish always, be it your daily life or any special occasion, giving you their exclusive attention.

Wardrobe genies
Relatively new in India, personal shoppers are already a rage in large cities like New York, Boston and London. Abroad, this concept is popular in malls and big departmental stores, where it is even free of cost. After make-up artists, fashion designers, grooming experts and wedding planners, we have inherited yet another trait from the West. But why is this concept booming? The answer is simple - the flourishing breed of fashionistas and ever-growing Indian retail market is conducive to it.

Is it for you?
When one thinks of hiring a personal shopper, the notion that it is a privilege reserved only for the elite, comes to mind. But that mindset is changing. Now, young girls or middle-aged housewives are also using personal shoppers. Preeti Kalani, who runs a personal shoppers service, confirms, "When I started my company in 2008, we were the first ones to bring the concept to India, so the response we got was relatively low, as people hardly knew about it. I had to explain to them how a personal shopper would enhance their shopping experience. But our client base has increased since then."

Brand and budget
You must be wondering why you need a personal shopper, when you can just pull a friend along to shop. Parul Shukla, an image consultant and personal shopper explains, "When I meet clients, I do some background research on them. I take a look at their existing wardrobe, ask them their brand preferences and budget. While selecting clothes for them, I also take into consideration their personality and body type. And I always give them an objective opinion." Since shoppers are aware of the various kinds of fabrics, materials, cuts and colors, they can suggest what suits you the best.

Picky brides...
Apart from buying clothes and accessories for daily wear, for most shoppers, bridal shopping has become a core element, because of its growing demand. An activity that can extend over months, shopping for a wedding includes buying the wedding trousseau, gifts for friends and relatives, etc and hence can be an overwhelming experience for the bride. So hiring a shopper is a good idea. "Every bride is picky and wants to look the best on her wedding day. At the same time she wants the most bang for her buck. This is where a personal shopper's guidance comes really handy," says costume designer Niharika Khan.

"A bride has a certain budget allotted to her trousseau shopping. I take them to various designers and we have an entire trial session to see what looks good and what doesn't work."

With so many bridal wear designers, couture stores and boutiques, the choices are endless and can be confusing for a novice. A personal shopper could provide you the assistance for your complete wedding planning and shopping, keeping the latest trends in mind and integrating it with your personal choice.
